A few years back, Google quietly released a social networking service called orkut, named after Orkut Buyukkokten, a Google SE who developed it, making excellent use of the personal time allowed to him by Google (All employees at Google are allowed to spend twenty percent of their time working on personal interests, a policy Google has to encourage creativity & a reason why it remains the dream company for folks like us :-))
When I came to know about it, I thought its just another alumni/batchmates kind of stuff. But to my surprise, it has become a rage in a very short period. Today you can find anyone & everyone who uses the internet regularly, on orkut. Moreover, more than anyone else, its the software professionals who're using it for networking. People are regularly finding their long lost classmates & colleagues. And the best thing is - All this comes free of cost (unlike classmates/batchmates sites where you have to cough up an exhorbitant amount to sign up for the 'premium' membership).
Moreover, the ease of usage & the 'personalized' experince are the factors which make it a hit among the masses. Apart from an easy-to-manage friend network, there's a vast array of communities @ your fingertips. Some of them are really funny and a good time pass whereas others are for a good cause.
Due to all these and much more, orkut is an addiction - embrace it or shun it. Thanks to this wonderful person who used his innovative mind to come up with something so good. Orkut - We love you.
